Armidale is a regional centre for research in rural science. BTWM has had a long and mutually beneficially association with the University of New England, based in Armidale.

As the international interest in duckweed has increased, our scientific associates have grown to include RMIT in Victoria, Rutgers University and North Carolina State University in the USA, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chengdu, University of Aalborg, Copenhagen, Denmark and University of Jena, Germany. Advanced communication technology has allowed us to maintain our corporate base in Armidale while participating in a truly global duckweed community of interest.
